This is a two minute sample from a 30 minute video work made for "Rockin' The Boat" a group exhibition on the issue of asylum seekers at At The Vanishing Point - Contemporary Art in Newtown. "Stay awhile" is a meditation on the torture of time, referring to the wait that the chickens in an industrial battery farm endure through their short captive lives (and what they are waiting for) as a metaphor for the unknowing, timeless waiting of the detainee. The point being that this video is a fragment, a sample of duration of that time, only a half an hour of it, before which no audience member would have the patience to stand and endure and which the detainee must endure hour after hour, day after day as a lived and necessary reality. There are also many other reverberations, for instance between the hostile indifference of the bush and the clinical systemic violence of the battery farm evoking not barbarity but the inhuman. Also there is the violence implicit in using a place of brutality as a metaphor for another practice and place of brutality and a reflection of the antinomy of human/inhuman against the antinomy citizen/non-citizen. |
